The Mullhyttan Rural Association
Purpose
Once
upon a time there was a village, for several hundred years called
Mullhyttan or Mullhyttemo. The name was well established and
referred to the "heyday" of the area with blast-furnace
works
(
Swedish: hytta ) in the centre. Postcards were stamped
Mullhyttemo, later Mullhyttan. The postal
address
was the same as the name of the village.
Then the postal authorities started to rationalize, to bring the
names of the post-offices of the districts
into
conformity.
In the early 1970-ies the Mullhyttan postal address became
Fjugesta. This was an attack on the identity of the village. It
was felt as an effort to eradicate Mullhyttan. How would people
find their way? You got visions of people driving around in
Fjugesta trying to find their friends in Mullhyttan,
ten
miles away. It actually happened that an ambulance drove around
in Fjugesta in search for a patient
in
Mullhyttan.
To stop this, protest meetings were held in the village and lists
of names were presented to the authorities. The whole village was
engaged and strong feelings were expressed. In the end Mullhyttan
was reinstated as postal address. The people of the village
learnt to work together to achive what the individuals cannot do
on their own.
In 1973 it was decided to form the Mullhyttan Rural
Association to deal with similar problems in the future.
The purpose of the Association is defined as follows:
The aim is
to work together for the good of the inhabitants of Mullhyttan,
to remember the past and to work for the present and the future
of the area.
The choir of Mullhyttan
The choir of Mullhyttan was
formed in 1976. It now has 18 members, aged between 12 and 80.
The choir often sings together with other choirs. Its leader is
Sune Yttergren. The repertoire contains
everything between folk songs and religious anthems. The choir
has appeared severel times in Storkyrkan, Stockholm, during the
Stockholm Water festivals. Last summer the choir sang gospels in
Örebro together with Cyndee Peters.
Youth activities
A section of the Association is
devoted to youth activities, together with the Sports Club, and
supported financially by the Lekeberg local authority. This is
appreciated by the young people and their parents alike. They
also have indoor activities such as table tennis and billiards.
Blast - furnace model
A group of members of the
Associatrion is called "Jerngänget", the Iron Gang.
For several years they have spent time on research in connection
with the iron works in Mullhyttan. They have also built a model
of the iron works in scale 1:100 as it would have looked like in
the 1850-ies.
